Viewing Counts as Payback Hours (1)

Thank you to those that could make the training webinar covering the new Marion Resourcers website!

Even if you were unable to attend, viewing this webinar counts as payback hours. After watching the webinar, you can earn an hour of payback and then use the new “Members” section of the website to enter your hours. I encourage you to try this new way of logging volunteer time. Its similar to the form we used pre-website.

Just moved? GET THRIFTY

A Reuse Article Inspired by Resourceful PDX

Whether you need a lamp for your bedroom, pots and pans for your kitchen, or extra chairs for when friends come over, you can find great deals in Marion County at many nonprofit thrift stores.

In addition to saving money, you’ll be giving back to your community – your purchases fund great, local causes. Out with the old, in with the new (to you).

As you unpack, you may find that items that fit well in your last place don't work in your new space. Instead of tossing them, donate them to a local nonprofit thrift store – and while you’re there, shop around for items you need to fill your new place.

Shop online

Did you know that many nonprofit thrift stores share their items online or through social media? Now you can browse from your couch – or that empty spot on the floor that’s waiting for a couch.

Local spots to shop, donate and borrow

Assistance League of Salem-Keizer has a secondhand clothing, housewares, and furniture shop + consignment program to put second hand products to good use and supplement income for community members. Get connected here.

Garten Services offers refurbished laptops, tablets, and tech through their online store. They accept donations of computers, laptops, and other technology at their Salem location. Additionally, they have a back to school deal currently offered for students who show their student ID, 25% off used electronics. Learn more here

ReStore has stores in Salem and Woodburn. Restore accepts donations of building materials and home goods. Mt. Angel has a Habitat for Humanity location which offers similar services as well as home rebuilding education and assistance programs

NW Hub accepts used bicycles that they recondition to get back to community members in need at low/no cost. Check out their website here.

Donate used tools to Santiam Canyon Tool Library. Fire-affected communities in the canyon use this tool library to borrow items helpful to the rebuilding process. Check out their Facebook to support them.

Sparrow Furniture accepts donations of used hardwood furniture to recondition and turn into functional, usable reclaimed wood furniture products. They also work to empower refugees through carpenty work apprenticeships and english classes. Your purchase and donations not only support reuse but community resilience. Learn more here.

Salem Public Library’s Library of Things (LOT) offers you the chance to check out a variety of useful items. Some are items that most people need to use only once or rarely. Some allow you to “try before you buy” if you are considering a purchase. The Library of Things supports a larger goal to reduce, reuse, and recycle in our community. Guidelines for borrowing a myriad of items found here.

Before taking your items to donate, check the organization's website to confirm what they currently accept: This can change depending on what their inventory is. Some organizations ask that you send photos in for pre-approval.

Volunteer Opportunities

Carrier Health Waste Prevention and Recycling Tabling September 6th

Payback Hours: 2-3

Carrier Corporation, Supra and Onity, are holding a Health and Safety fair and would be excited if a Marion Resourcer volunteer (potentially 2) could staff a recycling booth for their fair. They have over 140 employees and expect ~100 to attend the fair. Having someone to provide waste prevention and recycling information would be very beneficial. Email me if interested.

Preferred if volunteer could be present Wednesday September 6th, 9am-12pm, but they can work with a 2 hour increment if need be.

Address: 4001 Fairview Industrial Drive S, Salem, Oregon 97302, United States

Contact Name: Laurel Begnoche

Phone: (503) 510-6195

Email: laurel.begnoche@carrier.com

Notes: We will provide table and chairs. If the volunteer could provide literature and any displays, that would be great. The event will be inside and air conditioned.

This event counts as payback hours for the Marion Resourcers program.

Recycling modernization Act Webinar

rulemaking #2, Rulemaking advisory committee meeting #2

payback hours: 1-6 hours depending on time committment

The second rulemaking process has begun for the Recycling Modernization Act. While the new law fully goes into effect, July 1, 2025, there is still a lot to hash out through rulemakings. This rulemaking process sets out to determine what types of waste prevention programs will be funded through the producers of materials (i.e big brands and companies) as well as how recyclers (MRFs) will be permitted to ensure correct sorting, and verifiable end markets (i.e prevent waste colonialism and pollution overseas).

This particular webinar will be September 19th from 9am-3pm. That’s a long webinar! If you virtually attend a portion, that is completely acceptable. Just record your partial attendance hours in the hours entry form.

Register for the rulemaking webinar here.
